The Benefits Of Electro-Stimulation To Treat Erectile Dysfunction
Erectile dysfunction (ED) affects approximately 150 million men worldwide. Electrical stimulation (ES) therapy has shown a high regenerative capacity for smooth muscle cells and, therefore, is being increasingly adopted. ES can be a beneficial treatment option when the cause of erectile dysfunction is related to degeneration of cavernous smooth muscle.
The goal of Electro-Stimulation is to end dependence on shots and pills and to affect a recovery of erectile function equivalent to what the man had in his 30’s and early 40’s.
At the T-Clinic we’ve been using it for a long time as part of a worldwide trial spearheaded by Brazil and the USA.
In Johannesburg I have been the clinical assistant for the procedures from the beginning and I think it’s time to put my observations down on paper.
Over the past few years there have been many men who have gone through the procedure. It’s been interesting to see their reactions when I explain to them what will happen.
Essentially what happens is that 2 small electrodes are placed on either side of the penis and different electric currents are passed through. This generally illicits a nervous smile or laugh as they imagine their penises being electrocuted! Some patients are skeptical that the procedure will work – and I understand that. Many are eager to start are are open to the new experience.
So right from the outset I assure the patient, or potential patient, that it won’t hurt. They, in fact, control the intensity of the current.
The procedure is over 8 sessions, preferably 2 a week, and patients are told at the outset that this is not a magic bullet. It takes time and patience, and after about the fourth session the patient starts to experience changes for the better. As with so many procedures that don’t rely on medication, the body needs time to regenerate. The pace at which that happens depends on the patient.
All I can say is that it’s really gratifying to see the patient come in after a few sessions, with a smile on his face, telling me that he was able to make love to his wife again after a long time. And from that point things can only improve.
